Three Waters – the battleground

Three Waters – The battleground

Opinion:

Carrying on from my last post about dignity, we come to the Three Waters battleground. We have put up what we have already posted about this issue. The proposal by National is a very simple answer to this problem, Christopher Luxon`s answer is about fixing the problems with water, waste and storm water, giving councils the skills needed to do this (post)

The present government`s position is about water ownership and control and co-governance.

This is where the big issue is as we have discussed in our previous postings. It`s a simple choice. Nearly all of the councils in New Zealand have said “NO”,  we have a “NO” vote from the people. The Mayor of Auckland has said “NO” (article).  I wonder if there is some part of “we don`t want this” they in government don`t understand?

Now, I come to the hardest part of this post. Something that I`ve been thinking about for a long time, where the Treaty fits in all of this? I hope that this post will  get people  discussing where we are at in New Zealand without a position of race calling or insinuations but it`s time some questions need to be asked. In a way 3W allows us as a country to do that.

The Treaty has allowed Maori to put forward their case to be heard and have their claims considered with some excellent settlements being made, but what is happening now is a reference to the Treaty and 3W . I made a list of some questions that maybe are worth thinking about.

  1. Did the Treaty bring peace long term to Maori? …………. yes
  2. Who owns New Zealand? …………………………………………All of us
  3. Do Maori think they do? …………………………………………..A lot do I have heard this many times
  4. Do they want it back? ……………………………………………….some do
  5. Are Maori well served by the Treaty? …………………………they are now
  6. Is the rest of New Zealand well served by the Treaty? ….no
  7. Is the Treaty still relevant today? ……………………………….open
  8. Is it time to finish with the Treaty? …………………………….open
  9. Is a referendum the way to do this? ……………………………open
  10. Does the Crown act on behalf of Non-Maori? ……………open
  11. Who is the CROWN now? ……………………………………….open
  12. Is there a conflict of interest? ……………………………………open
  13. Is there a future for non Maori in nz if co governance were to happen ? …………………..open
  14. Do Maori own the water in NZ
  15. Is co governance something that we as a country want

We, now, have the Bill of Rights  covering indigenous people.

3W is about Maori ownership of water – this has long term implications for our renewable power generation as its driven by water and wind and sun. Maori already own the air over  Lake Taupo. Is there going to be a royalty to Maori from Water? Three waters is an open door to claims if we follow the governments proposal.

The way forward needs to be for all!  The Treaty is no longer for all.
